Ready to witness a celestial dance? This Saturday, November 15th, offers a fantastic opportunity to observe dwarf planet Ceres as it gracefully passes a double star in the constellation Cetus the Whale. This event promises a captivating view for stargazers of all levels.
This month, Ceres is embarking on a gentle journey through Cetus, guided by a few bright stars. For the best viewing experience, set your sights on the southern sky around 9 P.M. local time. You'll find Ceres positioned to the lower left of the radiant planet Saturn, which serves as a prominent marker in this region.
To pinpoint Ceres, use Saturn as your starting point. Then, locate the magnitude 3.6 star Iota (ι) Ceti, which is approximately 9.5° southeast of Saturn. From Iota Ceti, direct your binoculars or telescope about 2.7° further southeast to find the double star HD 2447. Its companion star is about 45” away. Ceres, which shines at magnitude 8, will be located approximately 4.5’ southeast of this stellar pair. Imagine capturing all three celestial bodies within a single field of view!
But here's where it gets exciting: To truly appreciate Ceres's movement, return to your observation point on the following night. You'll notice that Ceres has shifted slightly northwest, positioning itself roughly 1’ from the northernmost star of the double star system on the night of the 16th. This offers a clear demonstration of Ceres's path across the night sky.
